Lip Service: The Best Lip Balms From Kiehl's, Eve Lom, Nuxe, Cowshed and Vaseline

If you're anything like me the recent dip in temperature and extremely wintery conditions have left you with quite put-upon skin and very chapped lips. After a lot of trialling various lip saviours I decided to share my findings of the most effective - and some darn right luxurious - lip balms I have discovered from Kiehl's, Eve Lom, Nuxe, Cowshed and, let's not forget, good old Vaseline!

We all know the trials and tribulations your skin goes through during extreme weather conditions, especially in recent times when here in Ireland, Europe and not to talk of the "Snowcopalypse" in New York, we've experienced cold so severe it actually hurts whatever area of skin you haven't been able to cover up. Add to that the extremes of going from below freezing temperatures straight into central heating and open fires and there's no time of the year that puts your skin under so much duress. No two areas feel these extremes more than lips and hands and I've gone through a lot of chapped lips and uncomfortably dry hands to find the best products to tackle these problems! I've already compiled my all time favourite hand-saving products here and now it's time for some lip remedies!

Eve Lom - Kiss Mix

I was fortunate enough to receive this very luxurious Eve Lom lip treat as a present this Christmas and right in the middle of my search for the best lip balms available. Kiss Mix by Eve Lom is pretty much the most luxurious treat you could give your lips. The balm is white and lush like a cream and a few moments after you apply it you notice the loveliest tingle spread through your lips. A little goes a very long way so, although this is on the top of the budget price-wise, you're getting something pretty special that lasts for the duration of the winter.

Kiss Mix is formulated with menthol to cool your lips and, what I keep hearing from the experts as the number one ingredient you should have in a lip balm to keep your lips from chapping, beeswax to hydrate and soften your lips. Kiss Mix is a cult product the world over and, if you fancy investing in a bit of an extra special treat for your pout to keep those lips extra smooth and comforted, this is a pretty fabulous option!

Kiss Mix by Eve Lom is available from Space NK Grafton Street and costs €20.

Nuxe - Reve de Miel Lip Balm

Another product I have seen so many people write about, when I was in Spain before Christmas and saw a very colourful anniversary display on sale I finally treated myself to Nuxe's Reve de Miel to see what all the fuss was about. And my goodness it all immediately made sense!

Quite different from your average lip balm, you open the lid of this glass jar to see and smell something that really is quite hard not to want to taste. The gorgeous smell of lemon and honey and the texture of the yellow cream is simply divine. This product has been around for 20 years now and, like Nuxe's Huile Prodigieuse, it's very unique to itself and, once you try it, it's impossinble to imagine ever not having it again!

Put to the test originally in extreme weather conditions in Canada to ensure the plant extracts and oils could soothe and protect the delicate lip area, Reve de Miel is made from a combination of honey, plant oils, shea butter and grapefruit essence and really is a wonder product to protect, hydrate and soothe lips in all weather conditions. And a downright pampering treat to use too!

Nuxe Reve de Miel Lip Balm is available from selected pharamcies and Marks and Spencers nationwide and costs €10-12.

Kiehl's Lip Balm #1

Since I am such a Kiehl's fan I've had their Lip Balm #1 in my bag non-stop for some time now. Containing SPF4, this is a super basic, hydrating, petroleum lip balm in a tube. It's very simple and effective; perfect for protecting your lips from the harsh weather and hydrating them when they're dry and chapped. It's nice and smooth to apply and I always dab it on underneath lipstick to prevent cracking.

Kiehl's Lip Balm #1 is available from Kiehl's Wicklow Street, Dundrum Town Centre and Artnotts Henry Street

Cowshed - Lippy Cow Natural Lip Balm

Another recent find, I was introduced to Cowshed products by a friend in the past few months and I have to say I've been so impressed with the quality of their products and their quest for as naturally sourced ingredients as possible. Lippy Cow is such a comfort product for your lips. containing essential oils of linden blossom, rose geranium and ylang ylang, the smell is so comforting and the lip balm is so effective at hydrating your lips. I've used it a lot in the past week during the severe dip in temperatures, frost, snow, sleet and it's really done a great job at keeping my lips smooth and soft.

Cowshed Lippy Cow is about €7.00 and available from select pharmacies and health shops across the country and http://www.cowshedonline.com

Vaseline

Last, but definitely not least, the trusty old pot of Vaseline. There's not too much to say about this petroleoum jelly other than it's one of those tried and trusted, multi-purpose gems that everyone, male or female, young or old, goes straight for when the weather takes a dip. It costs about the same price as a loaf of bread and you know what you have before you ever knew what cosmetics were. When in doubt, pick up a pot of Vaseline!

Available in every shop, pharmacy, petrol station... for about €2!
